How to keep it working
Rakuten Mobile's plan includes 2 GB of data a month in 107 countries and regions as of April 2026, among them the US (mainland and Hawaii), Taiwan, China and Hong Kong. Past 2 GB the speed is capped at 128 kbps unless you buy 1 GB for ¥500, and the data counts toward the plan's allowance. Switch overseas roaming on in the my Rakuten Mobile app before you leave Japan. Texts between Rakuten Link users are free in Japan and abroad, and sending a text from abroad to a Japanese number through Link is free even if the recipient does not use Link. On iOS, Link cannot send or receive international SMS with someone who is not on Link, so use the standard Messages app. International calls and international SMS each have a monthly limit of ¥20,000.
