How to keep the number
China Mobile's suspend-and-keep service (停机保号) holds a number while the line is not in use. Under Shanghai's terms it costs 5 yuan for each calendar month in which the line stays suspended for the whole month; a month that is only partly suspended is not charged. A number that keeps paying the fee is not reclaimed. If the account balance cannot cover the fee, the line is suspended for arrears and the number can be reclaimed after a period. It is requested on 10086 or at a branch with valid ID. Other provinces publish their own terms, so check yours.
