HSBC China's Travel card is a premium card with a price tag to match: CNY 2,000 a year. Whether it is worth it depends on how much of that you take back in hotel vouchers, lounge visits and miles. This guide sets out what HSBC lists in October 2026 and gives you the arithmetic to decide for your own travel.
The card at a glance
- CNY 2,000
- Annual fee
- 5
- Hotel vouchers a year
- 8
- Lounge visits a year
- 18:1
- Points to miles
Main card, with supplementary cards free
CNY 300 each, CNY 1,500 in all
Airport and high-speed rail lounges, shared with companions
Each redemption starts at 1,000 miles
HSBC issues the card as a set of two: a Travel UnionPay Platinum and a Travel World Mastercard. It lists a limit of one set per customer, and one supplementary set per main cardholder.
What the fee buys
The biggest item is the hotel vouchers. There are five a year, and each one deducts CNY 300 from an order at one of nearly 1,000 designated five-star and high-end hotels, with brands such as Accor, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, Shangri-La and Starwood. You book in the hotel zone of HSBC China's privilege platform and pay with the HSBC card. A voucher is only worth CNY 300 to you if you would have booked that hotel anyway.
The lounge allowance is eight free visits a year, covering global airport lounges and domestic high-speed rail lounges, and cardholders can use them together with companions. HSBC lists extra benefits behind monthly-spend promotions as well, but those promotions run for set periods, so check them on the day you apply.
For how a fee is judged against what you use, see annual fees and break-even.
The arithmetic
Start with the fee and subtract the vouchers you will really use. If you use all five, CNY 500 is left, and eight lounge visits would cost CNY 62.5 each. With three vouchers, CNY 1,100 is left, or CNY 137.5 a visit. With none, the lounges are carrying the whole CNY 2,000, or CNY 250 a visit. Ask whether a lounge visit is worth that to you, and whether you would take eight.
Miles and protection
HSBC lists conversion of points to miles at 18 points for 1 mile, including Air China, China Eastern, British Airways and Asia Miles, and its redemption page names more programmes and says the list keeps changing. HSBC publishes the earn rate by card on its points page and says the card's own page governs. The Travel card page does not state its earn rate in one line, so look that up before you count on miles.
The card also lists flight-delay compensation of up to CNY 1,500 a time, up to CNY 7,500 a year, when you pay your own ticket in full with the card, which can include a spouse and children travelling with you, and the delay is 3 hours or more. Accident, overseas medical and emergency assistance carry up to CNY 3.5 million of cover each time. Lost-card protection covers up to CNY 50,000 of unauthorised spending in the 48 hours before you report a lost or stolen card.
Count the vouchers
Estimate honestly how many of the five you would use at the listed hotels.
Count the lounge visits
Count trips where you would use a lounge, up to eight.
Check the earn rate
Read HSBC's page for the Travel card's points rate before you value the miles.
Decide on the fee
Compare what is left after the vouchers with what the lounges and miles are worth to you.
Is it right for you?
Fits you
- You already stay in five-star and high-end hotels and would use most of the five vouchers.
- You fly often enough to use several of the eight lounge visits, and to take companions.
- You will convert points into miles for a programme you use.
Think twice
- You would use only one or two vouchers, which leaves most of the fee uncovered.
- You rarely visit a lounge, so the fee has to earn its keep elsewhere.
- You want a card with no annual fee at all.
For the lounge side of the decision, see airport lounge access in 2026.
