JCB's Original Series is best read as a ladder. Every rung earns J-POINT on the same base rate, and each rung up adds insurance, lounges and invitations. This guide goes through what JCB lists in October 2026 so that you can pick the rung that matches how you spend and travel.

The points programme
At the base rate of 1 point per 200 yen, 10,000 yen earns 50 points, and at 1 yen a point that is a 0.5 percent return. JCB's partner programme raises the rate when you register shops such as Amazon.co.jp, 7-Eleven and Starbucks, up to 21 times on some cards, which would be at most 1,050 points on 10,000 yen. Treat that as a ceiling, because the multiplier varies by card and shop, Starbucks counts only online top-ups, auto-charge, eGift and mobile orders, and corporate members are excluded.
- J-POINT
- The points the Original Series earns, usable at 1 yen a point on MyJCB Pay.
- J-POINT partner
- A shop you register on JCB's partner site to earn a higher multiplier.
- MyJCB
- JCB's members' web service, where upgrade applications are made.

Priority Pass goes to main members only, not family members.
Insurance conditions
The cover is not automatic on every card. For JCB Card S, W and W plus L, overseas travel insurance applies when you pay the fare of public transport or the price of a package tour with the card before you leave Japan, and JCB Card S also needs MyJ-Check registration. JCB Gold applies the same idea for overseas and domestic trips, including paying for lodging in advance. JCB's smartphone insurance applies when the phone bill has been paid with the card for at least the last three months running and the phone was bought within 24 months. Read JCB's insurance page for each card's own terms.
Start from your age and income
JCB Card W is for ages 18 to 39. JCB Card S needs a stable, continuing income for you or a spouse.
Register your partner shops
Register the shops you really use on JCB's partner site, and check the multiplier for your card.
Put travel costs on the card
Pay the fare or tour price on the card before departure so that the insurance applies.
Look at Gold when you travel often
The upgrade is a request in MyJCB, and JCB screens it.
Is it right for you?
Fits you
- You want a free card with a solid base rate and a clear path to Gold.
- You shop at Amazon.co.jp, 7-Eleven or Starbucks online and can register them as partners.
- You are 18 to 39 and want a card that stays free for life.
Think twice
- You want lounge access on a free card, which starts at Gold.
- You expect the insurance to apply without paying the fare or tour on the card.
- Your shops are not on JCB's partner list, so you earn only the base rate.
For the lounge side, see airport lounge access in 2026.
