"5x points at hotels" sounds better than "4x points at hotels", until you see what a point buys. Hotel cards are the cleanest example in rewards of why the multiplier alone tells you very little. This guide works two real cards through the maths and explains the rules that cost people the most.
Multiplier times value
The quickest way to compare any points card is to multiply the earning rate by what a point is worth. US Credit Card Guide values Hyatt points at about 1.6 cents and Wyndham points at about 0.7 cents in its 2026 reviews, in line with its wider table where Hilton sits near 0.4 and Marriott near 0.7 (see what points are worth).
So the Wyndham Earner's 5x at its own hotels is worth about half of the Hyatt card's 4x. Note one more trap in the Hyatt marketing. The advertised 9x includes the 5x base points that every World of Hyatt member earns on eligible stays. The card adds 4x.
The free-night test
- $95
- The World of Hyatt annual fee, not waived in the first year
- $200+
- The usual value of a Category 1 to 4 free night, per the review
- $105
- The net before you earn a single point
Chase
If you would have booked it
200 - 95
You receive one free night, redeemable at a Category 1 to 4 Hyatt hotel, each year after you pay the fee. The 2026 review says it is generally not hard to use it at over $200 of value. The card also gives an extra night after $15,000 of spend in a calendar year, a Discoverist status and five qualifying nights toward the next tier each year. Add the points on whatever you spend, and a $95 fee has a clear path to pay off, but only if you use the night.
Wyndham: cheap to hold, careful to spend
The Wyndham card has no annual fee and a simple award chart with three tiers, at 7,500, 15,000 and 30,000 points, or 6,750, 13,500 and 27,000 with the card's 10% discount. Its flaw is expiry. Points expire after 18 months of inactivity and after four years regardless, so the guide's advice is not to build a big balance if you do not plan to stay with Wyndham soon. A free night there is often worth less because many Wyndham hotels are inexpensive. The 75,000-point offer in 2026 requires spending $500 at Wyndham hotels, so it suits people who were going to stay anyway.
Application rules
Chase: the 5/24 rule
Chase will not approve you if you have five or more new accounts in 24 months. Do not apply for more than two Chase cards in 30 days. See US issuer application rules.
Chase: bonus eligibility
You cannot get the Hyatt card if you currently have any Hyatt card, or if you received a Hyatt card bonus in the past 24 months.
Barclays: hard pulls and 6/24
Barclays weighs recent inquiries, so apply with fewer than six in six months. A soft 6/24 rule applies.
Start with history
Both reviews suggest at least a year of credit history first.
Hotel loyalty is a separate game from the card, and hotel loyalty programs covers the elite-status side. For the break-even logic behind a fee, see annual fees and break-even.
Questions people ask
Why does Hyatt advertise 9x points?
The 9x includes the base points every World of Hyatt member earns on eligible stays. The card itself adds 4x, so the figure to use for the card's value is 4x.
What if I do not stay at Hyatt often?
The card then rests on the free night and the everyday 2x categories. The numbers still work if you would use the night, but not otherwise.
Can I downgrade the Hyatt card to a no-fee card?
Per the 2026 review, you cannot downgrade this card to a no-annual-fee card, so close it when you no longer want it.
