The Freedom Flex is the Chase card for people who like to work the system a little. It has no annual fee, and each quarter it pays 5 percent on a list of categories Chase announces, up to 1,500 dollars. The catch is that you have to activate the list, and the list changes. This guide goes through what Chase lists in October 2026 and the sum that tells you whether the effort pays.

Bar chart of Freedom Flex cash back: 5 percent on rotating categories and on Chase Travel, 3 percent on dining and drugstores, 1 percent on everything else.
The 5 percent on rotating categories is capped at 1,500 dollars a quarter, which is at most 300 dollars of cash back a year.

How the rotating bonus works

Chase sets the 5 percent categories for each quarter and says they may include individual merchants as well as types of shop. You must activate before you spend. A purchase counts only if the merchant submits it to Chase by the last day of the quarter, so a late posting can miss the bonus. After 1,500 dollars of combined purchases in the categories, you earn 1 percent again for the rest of the quarter, with no maximum.

  1. Put the dates in your calendar

Chase's calendar shows activation opening on 15 September 2026, 15 December 2026 and 15 March 2027 for the next three quarters.

  2. Activate the quarter

Do it in the Chase app or on the website as soon as the window opens.

  3. Plan the 1,500 dollars

Decide what you will buy in the categories anyway. Use the card only for those purchases, not for spending you would not otherwise do.

  4. Check the posting date

Buy a few days before quarter end, so the charge posts in time.

Cash back is tracked as points, 100 to the dollar, and does not expire while the account is open. Chase also lists purchase protection for 120 days up to 500 dollars per item, an extra year on eligible warranties, trip cancellation and interruption up to 1,500 dollars per traveller and 6,000 per trip, and auto rental cover that is secondary to your own insurance in the US.

Is the effort worth it?

Inside the activated categories the Flex pays 5 percent against the Unlimited's 1.5, a gain of 3.5 points. Everywhere else it pays 1 percent against 1.5, a loss of half a point. The break-even is therefore the number of dollars you put in the activated categories.

Bar chart of yearly cash back on 22,000 dollars of spending: a flat 2 percent card 440 dollars, the Flex with 1,000 dollars in the activated categories 460, the Unlimited 490, the Flex with 4,000 dollars in the categories 580.
The Flex only wins if you can feed the categories. A flat card earns the same whether you remember to activate or not.

Eligibility and the application

Chase's page says the offer is for people who do not have this card and have not received a new cardmember bonus for it in the past 24 months. The amount changes, so this guide does not quote one.

Is it right for you?

Fits you

  • You will remember to activate every quarter, and you have steady spending the categories cover.
  • You travel abroad and want no foreign transaction fee on a no-fee card.
  • Dining and drugstores make up a good share of your spending.

Think twice

  • You do not want a calendar of activation dates.
  • Most of your spending would fall outside the activated categories, where the Unlimited pays more.
  • You want a single flat rate with no thinking, like a 2 percent card.

Questions people ask

How do the rotating categories work?

Chase publishes the 5 percent categories for each quarter, and you must activate them by the deadline. The 5 percent applies to combined purchases up to 1,500 dollars a quarter, then falls back to 1 percent. Categories can name individual merchants as well as types of shop.

When can I activate?

Chase's calendar shows activation opening on 15 September 2026 for the next quarter, 15 December 2026 for the one after and 15 March 2027 for the one after that. Put the dates in your calendar, because the bonus depends on activating by Chase's deadline.

Does the Flex charge foreign transaction fees?

No. Chase's page says you earn rewards worldwide with no foreign transaction fees.

Which should I pick, the Flex or the Unlimited?

The Flex has the higher ceiling and needs more work. The Unlimited is simpler and pays more on everything outside the bonus categories. The comparison guide sets out the sums.

What protections does it include?

Chase lists purchase protection for 120 days up to 500 dollars per item, an extra year on eligible warranties, trip cancellation and interruption up to 1,500 dollars per traveller and 6,000 per trip, and auto rental cover that is secondary to your own insurance in the US.
