The American Express Platinum Card in Japan is a premium card with a fee that is easy to cover on paper and harder to cover in practice. Its credits are real, but several of them depend on spending ¥5,000,000 a year or on using things you would not otherwise use. This guide goes through what Amex Japan lists in October 2026, how to count the value honestly, and who should hold the card.

Bar chart of the Platinum fee against its credits: a fee of ¥165,000, an airline credit of ¥100,000 and dining cashback of at most ¥40,000 a year.
The two cash-like credits come to ¥140,000, so the fee is covered only with the other benefits you use.

What the fee buys

Amex Japan groups the benefits by use. The table keeps to what its page lists and the condition that comes with each one.

The ¥5 million line

The airline credit and the second hotel night are the two benefits Amex Japan ties to annual spending of ¥5,000,000, tax included. In the first year the airline credit is listed without that condition.

Bar chart of Membership Rewards points a year at one point per ¥100: 10,000 for ¥1,000,000, 30,000 for ¥3,000,000 and 50,000 for ¥5,000,000.
The ¥5,000,000 line corresponds to about 50,000 points a year, if every purchase earns.

Points and Membership Rewards

Amex Japan lists one Membership Rewards point per ¥100, and says that some merchants earn nothing or one point per ¥200. Points can transfer to the miles of 13 airline partners, offset card charges, convert to PayPay point codes or department-store gift cards, or buy items from a catalog of more than 500. Platinum holders can register free for Membership Rewards Plus, and the page lists 3 points per ¥100 at designated merchants and on foreign-currency spending once you register for those bonus programmes.

Before you apply

  1. Add up the credits you would use

Count the airline credit only if you would buy that overseas flight, and dining only if you eat at the eligible restaurants.

  2. Decide whether ¥5 million a year is realistic

It is the line for the airline credit from year two and the second hotel night.

  3. Read the current terms

Amex Japan's page changes, so read it on the day you apply, including the conditions for each benefit.

  4. Set a reminder for renewal

Decide at renewal, with a year of actual use, whether the fee is still covered.

Is it right for you?

Fits you

  • You fly overseas every year and the airline credit pays for flights you would book anyway.
  • You eat at the eligible restaurants and would use the dining cashback.
  • You use Centurion Lounges and the hotel programmes the card unlocks.

Think twice

  • You would not reach ¥5,000,000 a year, which carries the airline credit from year two.
  • You would use the lounges and hotel status only once or twice a year.
  • You want miles on every purchase, where merchants that earn nothing or less lower the total.
