Cash is still around in Malaysia, but a lot of daily spending goes through QR codes and wallets, and Touch 'n Go eWallet is the most common. The operator, TNG Digital, is a joint venture of Touch 'n Go and Ant Group, and a late-2025 guide reports 23 million users and two million merchants. Visitors with a phone number from outside Malaysia can now register an international version. Here is what it does and does not do.
What you get, and what you do not
Registering
You will need a phone number that can receive WhatsApp messages, the wallet app, a passport and a stable connection.
Install the app
Download the Touch 'n Go eWallet app from the store.
Pick your country code
Choose the code that matches your number, for example +86, +852 or +61.
Receive the code on WhatsApp
Enter the code the app sends to your WhatsApp.
Set a PIN and enter your details
The app asks for a six-digit PIN and your personal information.
Verify your identity
Choose non-Malaysian, then foreigner, then your ID type, usually a passport. Photograph the passport and take a selfie.
Wait for approval
The guide says approval is usually immediate.
Topping up
A foreign card
Link an international Visa, Mastercard or prepaid card to reload.
A reload PIN
Buy a PIN at a convenience store or petrol station in Malaysia.
DuitNow
If you have a Malaysian or Singaporean bank account, transfer by DuitNow.
Check the currency conversion and fee on your card before you reload, as covered in paying abroad and cards with no foreign transaction fee.
Tips for travellers
Keep a second way to pay
Carry a card and some cash in case a merchant does not accept the wallet.
Link a transit card if you will use public transport
The guide notes that the wallet can be tied to an enhanced Touch 'n Go card for transport and highway tolls.
Protect the account
Use a PIN you do not reuse, and see two-factor and passkeys.
Stay safe
Bank Negara Malaysia warns about mobile-application scams, in which criminals persuade people to install an app from outside the official stores and then read their text messages and one-time codes. Install apps only from your phone's official store, and do not tap links in text messages that claim to come from a bank or a wallet. Never share your PIN or a one-time code. Touch 'n Go's own security centre also warns against letting anyone use your wallet to receive or move money for them, because a wallet used that way can be treated as a mule account and its owner can face legal action.
Questions people ask
Can I take my remaining balance home?
No. The international version cannot cash out or transfer to a bank account. Spend the balance in Malaysia or keep it for your next visit.
Why is the verification code sent by WhatsApp?
The wallet's operator uses WhatsApp to confirm that foreign numbers are active and valid. Install and activate WhatsApp on the number you use.
Do I need to register before I arrive?
It is easier to do the identity check on stable Wi-Fi before you travel, but check the current rules in the app because registration terms can change.
