Hong Kong is easy to move around if three things work on arrival: data, a way to tap through transit, and enough local cash. This checklist pulls those items together and adds the opening hours that matter if you plan to visit a bank.
The first day
Data
Roaming
Ask your carrier to turn on roaming before you leave, or buy a day or multi-day pass from your carrier's app or a shopping app.
Free Wi-Fi
Stations, malls and shops offer free Wi-Fi if you cannot get signal. It is enough to message your carrier.
A local data SIM
Buy one at a 7-Eleven or Fortress and pay with Octopus. See eSIM explained.
For longer stays, read travel eSIM vs local SIM vs roaming.
Transit
Option A: transit QR code
Alipay and WeChat offer a Hong Kong transit QR code for the metro and buses.
Option B: the Octopus app
Download the Octopus app, choose the visitor version and top it up.
Navigation
Google Maps and AutoNavi are suggested together, with offline maps downloaded in advance.
Payments and cash
Many visitors link a card to a local wallet. See linking a Hong Kong bank card to AlipayHK. Carry some Hong Kong dollars in small notes, and see paying abroad for card and wallet tips.
What to carry
Pack for the first hour, not just the trip. Things that are easy to fix at home can be slow to fix on arrival, so check this list before you leave.
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Passport and the border-gate slip | Needed for identity checks, including some bank visits |
| A phone with roaming or a data plan | Verification codes arrive by text |
| A power bank and cable | Maps, QR codes and the transit app drain the battery |
| A card with no foreign transaction fee | See cards with no foreign transaction fee |
| Small Hong Kong dollar notes | Small shops and some stalls may not take a wallet |
| Offline maps and your hotel address saved in Chinese | Useful if the signal drops |
Paying by QR code safely
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority advises checking the payee and the amount shown after you scan a QR code before you confirm, and turning NFC off once a tap payment is finished. Check your transaction record after each payment, so that a wrong amount or a payment you did not make shows up on day one rather than at the end of the trip.
If you visit a bank
| Day | Typical hours |
|---|---|
| Monday to Friday | 9:00 to 17:00 |
| Saturday | Some branches 9:00 to 13:00 |
| Sunday | Closed |
Hong Kong has its own public holidays, so check the calendar. Mid-week mornings are reported to be quieter than weekends, and branches in business districts and tourist areas are reported to have longer queues.
Questions people ask
Is the Octopus visitor app different from the local one?
Yes. The Octopus app has a local version and a visitor version, and a visitor generally downloads the visitor one.
How much Hong Kong cash should I bring?
A guide suggests around 1,000 Hong Kong dollars per card for opening deposits, and some banks ask for 10,000. Plan for your own purpose and check the bank's rule.
Which maps work in Hong Kong?
Google Maps and AutoNavi are reported to cover walking, metro and bus routes between them. Download the maps you need before you travel.
