Some cards carry protections that are easy to ignore until something goes wrong. Used well, they can cover a delayed bag or a dented rental car. Used carelessly, they may not pay at all, because the conditions are strict.

The common protections

  • Trip delay

Pays for meals or a hotel when a trip is delayed beyond a set time.

  • Baggage

Compensates for lost or delayed bags, with limits per person.

  • Rental car

Covers damage or theft of a rental car when you decline the company's cover.

  • Purchase protection

Covers theft or damage of new purchases for a short period.

What usually has to be true

  1. You paid with the card

Many benefits apply only to the portion of the trip charged to that card, such as the airfare or the hotel.

  2. The event is covered

A listed cause, such as a carrier delay, not any problem.

  3. You stay within the limits

Daily, per-trip and per-item limits apply. Read them before you rely on a benefit.

  4. You notify in time

Deadlines can be as short as a few weeks. Call or file as soon as you can.

Good use of a benefit

  • Checking the guide to benefits for your exact card
  • Paying for the trip with the card that carries the cover
  • Keeping every receipt and report

Poor use of a benefit

  • Assuming all cards give the same cover
  • Not reading the exclusions
  • Waiting until you are home to notify

How to claim

  1. At the time

    Document

Get a written report from the airline, hotel or police, and keep receipts.

  2. Within days

    Notify

Contact the benefit administrator named in your guide to benefits.

  3. Within weeks

    Submit

Send the claim form, with receipts, reports and proof of payment.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming cover without reading. Different cards in the same family can offer different benefits.

  • Declining the rental company's cover where the card excludes the country. Check before you travel.

  • Missing the notification window. File first, then gather the paperwork.

  • Not keeping the original receipts. Photos help, but the administrator may ask for originals.

Before each trip, spend five minutes on the guide to benefits for the card you will use. Note the phone number to call, the deadline to report and the documents you will need. That page is easier to read at home than at an airport desk. If you are unsure whether something is covered, ask the benefit administrator before you travel, not after something goes wrong.

Questions people ask

Is card cover the same as travel insurance?

Not exactly. Card benefits are usually narrower and secondary to other cover. A separate policy can include medical care and repatriation, which many cards do not.

Who do I contact to claim?

Usually the benefit administrator named in your guide to benefits, not the bank's general line. Check the notification deadline, which can be short.
