An award flight is a ticket bought with miles instead of money. It can be a very good deal, but only if you prepare in the right order. Search first, move points later.

From idea to ticket

  1. Pick your dates and airports

Be flexible by a few days. Award seats are limited, and nearby airports often have more.

  2. Search award space

Use the airline's own site and its partners. If you see a seat, note the exact flights and the points price.

  3. Add up the cash

Check the taxes and fees you must still pay. Compare it with the cash fare for the same flights.

  4. Get the miles

Move or buy miles only now, in the amount the booking needs, and wait for them to arrive.

  5. Book and check

Book with your frequent flyer number. Open the confirmation and verify names, dates and baggage.

What drives the points price

  • Economy, off-peak30k

    Example price in thousand points

  • Economy, peak dates45k

    Same route, busier season

  • Business, off-peak70k

A premium cabin costs far more points

  • Business, peak dates110k

Peak dates and a premium cabin together

These numbers are an illustration, not a price list. The point is the shape: season and cabin can multiply the points required, and another airline on the same route can price it differently.

  1. Before

    Search

Check dates and partners, and look for the cash price to compare.

  2. Same day

    Book

Do not wait: award seats can disappear quickly.

  3. After

    Check

Confirm the booking and set a reminder for change and cancellation rules.

Common mistakes

  • Transferring points first. You may find the seat gone once the miles arrive.

  • Ignoring taxes and fees. Compare the cash you pay, not only the points.

  • Booking the wrong name. Match the passport exactly.

  • Skipping the rules. Learn the change, cancellation and stopover rules before you pay.

A short checklist

  • Seat found, with flight numbers noted.

  • Points price and cash fees compared with the fare.

  • Miles in the right program, before you book.

  • Name, dates and baggage checked on the confirmation.

The cost of waiting

Award seats can be released and withdrawn without notice, so decide your dates, search early and have your miles ready. If your plans change, most programs let you cancel and put the miles back for a fee, so a booking that fits your plan today is better than a perfect one that has disappeared.

Questions people ask

Why can't I find award seats on my date?

Airlines release a limited number of seats at the award price. Try nearby dates, different airports, and a partner airline that flies the same route.

Are cash fees higher on some programs?

Yes. Some programs pass on carrier surcharges, others do not. Compare the cash you must still pay before you choose where to book.
