An eSIM that refuses to connect is annoying, especially in a new country. The good news is that the same short list of causes explains most problems, and you can work through them calmly.

First, find where it stops

  1. 1

    Plan installed?

  2. 2

    Line switched on?

  3. 3

    Right line for data?

  4. 4

    Roaming on?

  5. 5

    Network found?

Check in this order

  1. Is the plan installed and switched on?

Open the cellular or SIM settings. The line should be listed and turned on.

  2. Is it the line used for mobile data?

With two lines, choose the travel line for mobile data and switch off data roaming on the home line.

  3. Is data roaming turned on for the travel line?

Many travel plans need roaming enabled on that line to connect to the local network.

  4. Is the network available?

Restart the phone, then turn on airplane mode for ten seconds. Choose the network by hand if automatic selection fails.

  5. Is the phone unlocked and supported?

A phone locked to a carrier will not accept another carrier's plan. Check your model's support page.

  • Wrong line

The home SIM carries the data and the travel plan sits idle.

  • Roaming off

The travel line needs data roaming switched on for that line only.

  • Coverage

You are indoors or at the edge of the network. Move to a window or outdoors.

  • Used-up code

The QR code was scanned or deleted already. Ask for a new one.

When it still fails

  1. Minutes

    Restart and reset

Reboot, toggle airplane mode and reselect the network.

  2. An hour

    Check with the provider

Confirm the plan is active, the data is not used up and the start date has begun.

  3. Next

    Reinstall if allowed

Only delete the profile after the provider says you can add it again.

If you have to contact support, give them the plan name, the date it was installed and what the phone shows. That saves a round of questions.

Common mistakes

  • Installing the plan only at the airport. Do it the evening before, on reliable Wi-Fi.

  • Turning off all roaming. The travel line may need it, while the home line should not.

  • Reinstalling without asking. A second scan of a single-use code can fail.

Write down the steps that worked. Next time you travel, the same notes will save you ten minutes at the airport.

Questions people ask

Can I move an eSIM to a new phone?

Often yes, but it depends on the provider and the phone brand. Check the transfer options in your phone's settings, or ask the provider for a new code before you swap devices.

Why does the QR code say it is no longer valid?

Many providers issue a single-use code. Once it has been scanned or the profile was deleted, you need a new one from the provider.
